Prepare for a podcast interview

With today’s expanded range of remote working opportunities, it’s likely that you will be on a Zoom type of call, eventually. Or possibly you might be interviewed for a podcast or internet video show.

Sure, you could simply log on and hope for the best, and things might work out fine. But with a little effort testing your current setup and possibly investing in a couple of affordable accessories, you could take your remote presence to the next level.

Podcasts are reaching new popularity for people sharing information in their chosen fields. Maybe you’ve found yourself invited to talk on a podcast or Zoom event and want to put your best step forward.

This article covers some basic ways to present yourself for the best quality audio and video without having to purchase an expensive microphone or lighting rig.

We are never the best judge of what we sound like.

It takes a lot of practice to know how you sound best in different environments. You have to train your ear to not be repulsed by what you sound like in a recording.

Most people don’t like the way they sound. What you hear as you are talking is a vastly different experience than what a recording (played back) of your own voice sounds like. It’s your voice, but it feels like a song sung in an unfamiliar key.

The same thought goes for video. We are accustomed to what we look like in a mirror, but we aren’t always the most objective when it comes to seeing ourselves on screen.

Work with a buddy

Working with someone is the best way to test the setup for your environment. As you try things out, you can talk about what’s working best. Ideally you should test in the same manor your host plans on using (e.g. if you are being interviewed over Zoom or Skype, use that to test with).
